SB 259 Protects Women by Removing Firearms from Domestic Abusers

SANTA FE, NM (March 15, 2017) — The New Mexico House of Representatives voted 44-22 to pass SB 259, a bill that requires subjects of certain domestic violence protective orders to surrender guns and prohibits purchase of guns for the duration of a protective order.

More than half of all women murdered in the United States are killed by an intimate partner with a gun. Removing firearms from domestic violence situations decreases the likelihood that such violence will become deadly.

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Executive Director Josh Horwitz issued the following statement on the passage of SB 259:

“Tonight, lawmakers in New Mexico took an important step to protect victims of domestic violence. We know that the chance of being murdered by an abusive partner increases fivefold if there is a gun in the home, and guns are often used to intimidate women into staying in abusive relationships. Removing firearms from domestic abusers is a commonsense policy that can protect the lives of countless women. We applaud New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence for working tirelessly to save lives, and we urge the Senate to quickly pass the House version of the bill and send it to Governor Martinez for her signature.”
