VICTIMS AND ADVOCATES AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE TO PROTEST OUTSIDE ANNUAL FUNDRAISING DINNER OF NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT-BASED GUN LOBBY ORGANIZATION
Protesters to draw attention to corporate gun lobbyists and Members of Congress who have opposed expanded background checks
Washington, DC—Nearly 100 victims and survivors of gun violence and other advocates will protest the corporate gun lobby’s obstruction of sensible gun laws such as expanded background checks outside the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s (NSSF) annual Congressional Fly-In fundraising dinner in Washington, D.C., today, Wednesday, April 2, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the 20 F Street NW Conference Center, located at 20 F Street NW; Washington, DC, 20001.
Protesters will share their personal stories of loss associated with gun violence and advocate for expanded Brady background checks supported by 90% of Americans. Participating organizations include the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Every Child Matters Education Fund, Newtown Action Alliance and Project End Gun Violence.The speaking program is slated to be held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Speakers include:
Kelley Byrdsong, daughter of Ricky Byrdsong, the former Northwestern basketball coach who was killed by a man who purchased a gun without a background check.
Tom Sullivan, father of Alex Sullivan, who was killed in the Aurora, Colorado movie theater mass shooting.
Tyrek Marquez, who, at age 7, was shot in the head while at a parade.
Yolan Henry, mother of Nova Henry, who was shot and killed along with her 10-month old daughter by her abusive ex-husband.
Nardyne Jefferies, mother of Brishell Jones, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Washington, D.C.
Rev. Dr. Crystal Kuykendall, whose husband was robbed and murdered in East Orange, New Jersey by a 17-year-old drug addict carrying a .22 caliber pistol.
Lori Hass, whose daughter was shot and injured during the Virginia Tech Massacre.
Christian Heyne, whose parents were shot (and his mother killed) in Thousand Oaks, California.
